Musgrove Returns to Padres After Nearly Two Years Without Pitching
Joe Musgrove was added to the San Diego Padres’ 26-player roster for the National League Wild Card Series, almost two years after his most recent appearance in the Major Leagues. Manager Craig Stammen confirmed the surprising decision on Tuesday, before the team hosted the Chicago Cubs.
The right-hander, 34, has not played for his hometown team since Oct. 2, 2024, when he exited with a right elbow injury during the Padres’ Wild Card Series-clinching victory over Atlanta. He underwent Tommy John surgery, missing the entire 2025 season and the full 2026 season as well, as his recovery progressed slower than expected.
Musgrove made four rehab appearances in August, though he acknowledged difficulties in his recovery after each outing. This month he pitched in instructional league games, a performance that convinced the organization. His selection left candidates such as Randy Vásquez, Wandy Peralta, Casey Mize — acquired at the trade deadline — and Griffin Canning off the 11-pitcher roster.
The roster also included outfielder Miguel Andújar, who had not played since July 19 due to a wrist fracture, after taking batting practice at Petco Park on Monday. Catcher Ethan Salas, 20, was also confirmed as expected; if he plays in the series, he would become the youngest catcher in Major League postseason history.
