Ronaldo Cites Jorge Jesus' Broken Promise After National Team Exit
Cristiano Ronaldo stated that he will remain available for the Portugal national team, despite having left the squad during the current FIFA international window. In a lengthy statement released by the Portuguese press on Tuesday, the 41-year-old forward blamed coach Jorge Jesus for failing to honor an agreement regarding his playing time in the Nations League matches.
According to the player, there was a pre-agreed plan to manage his minutes on the pitch, and he expected the coach to publicly clarify the situation and take responsibility. Ronaldo said that did not happen and that Jesus instead spoke aggressively in a press conference, which led to a breakdown of trust between the parties.
Despite the incident, Ronaldo acknowledged he owes explanations to his teammates and said he expects to be punished by the federation. He also assured that there will be an official farewell from the national team pitch in the future.
“I can promise all my fans, and naturally especially all Portuguese people, that we will have one or more farewell matches. There will be time for that,” said Ronaldo, adding that, being physically fit and scoring goals for the club, he will remain available for the national team after serving any imposed suspension.
