Saleh Reveals 49ers Almost Selected Skattebo Before Giants
Running back Cam Skattebo, now with the New York Giants, was close to being selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2025 Draft, according to Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh. He said the team was ready to select the Arizona State player, but the Giants picked him first, at pick 105.
Saleh, who at the time was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, told reporters on Wednesday that head coach Kyle Shanahan “loved” Skattebo before the pick went to the Giants. According to him, San Francisco ended up selecting C.J. West shortly after.
The revelation gains context from Skattebo’s current situation, as he recovers from a serious ankle injury suffered in 2025 and has been standing out in the early games of his career, totaling 527 yards and six touchdowns in ten games. In the season-opening week against the Dallas Cowboys, he rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Giants’ victory.
Saleh’s comment reinforces Shanahan’s reputation as an evaluator of talent at the position, even though the fit didn’t materialize. The Titans face the Giants next on the schedule, a game that should put Saleh face to face with the player who almost would have been his teammate in San Francisco.
